Inside out is proud to serve artists and groups in hosting visiting artists workshops and by delivering traveling art workshops to your school, club, organization, or other gatherings of creative people.
We currently offer the following workshops with Master Mask Maker Jeff Semmerling:
The Magic of Masks and Puppetry
In this 50 minute presentation Jeff Semmerling takes your group on a wild adventure discovering the ancient fascination we share beneath our skin for mask and puppet characters. Lot’s of audience participation with Jeff’s masks and puppets makes for serious fun for all.
Masks For All Ages
Is a two-hour beginner's workshop in mask performance and construction. Students spend the first hour making a mask from cardboard and construction paper. In the second hour a simple mask performance discipline is taught and practiced. This class is good for development of skills of communication and presentation before groups. Principles of performance and self-expression are unselfconsciously explored behind the identity of the masks.
Mardi Gras Mask Making
Is a two hour workshop in feather mask making. Instructor Jeff Semmerling will bring images of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, hot glue guns, feathers, beads and rhinestones. You will make two lovely feather masks to take home.
Venetian Mask Making
Is a multi-day, up to three hours/ day, workshop in which the secrets of Venetian Papier Mache' mask making are learned and practiced. First sculptures are made and cast in plaster. Then papier masks are formed in the plaster molds.
Making a Mask Matrix
Is the first three steps toward construction on many types of masks. A cast is made of the students face from which a positive matrix is cast. Techniques of sculpting are demonstrated and practiced as a mask sculpture is made. This class is designed to precede any of the following workshops in mask construction.
Papier Mache' Mask Construction
(Also taught as Commedia Dell’Arte Mask Making)
The secrets to casting a professional papier mache' mask are taught and practiced as students make a papier copy of their mask matrix.
Latex and Neoprene Mask Construction
A demonstration in how to cast, pour, vulcanize and finish a latex or neoprene mask.
Leather Mask Construction
Learn the simple system for the making of leather masks that has been developed by Jeff Semmerling and Sonja Schaefer of Semmerling and Schaefer Mask Studios in Chicago, Illinois, USA. A demonstration of two hours and a workshop of several days are available.
Improvisational Comedy
Practice the playful, spirit freeing games of "Chicago-Style Improve Comedy." Learn the simple rules and techniques to unleash your sense of humor and cooperative abilities.
Puppet Adventures
Make puppet characters from well known stories and use them to put on a show. Great for developing hand dexterity and improving reading in a fun cooperative atmosphere.
Message Bearing Masks & Puppets
Jeff Semmerling, master mask maker of Inside Out Arts Studio, shows now to turn cardboard and paints into penetrating tools of social change. With cardboard, blades, glue, gesso and paint you will make large smile masks and see examples & techniques to inspire you to make an artful difference.
Movement for Mask Performance
Neutral, Larval, and Character Masks are used to explore the power of mask performance. Students work in Jeff Semmerlings masks to “bring light” to mask characters.
